Scenography
Inaugurated in 1989, the Opéra Bastille is the largest opera
house in Paris and a major institution in the world of opera.
Carlos Ott’s initial project included an experimental modular
auditorium, designed to complement the main auditorium
with its 2,700 seats, and an extension of the building and
workshops intended to connect to the Coulée Verte park.
Although the structures were partially built, they were never
fitted out. Initiated in 2016, in conjunction with the creation
of the Cité du Théâtre at the Ateliers Berthier, the project to
fit out the modular hall and extend the workshops is now
back on track. The scenography of the new modular hall,
a space dedicated to opera rehearsals, can accommodate
800 spectators for new contemporary lyrical forms, dance,
and events. Equipped with convertible seats and a modular
orchestra pit, the hall allows the Opera’s set wagons to be
transferred directly from the main stage. A new rehearsal
room for the Opera orchestra is located in the upper part of
the unfinished stage house, providing a high-quality space
for musicians. The project also includes the extension of the set construction workshops and logistics area, additional storage space, and a new painting area, all intended to bring the activities currently held at Berthier back to the Bastille site. The project was ultimately abandoned in its initial form in 2021. Since 2022, the modular hall has been occupied by a temporary installation of the Grand Palais Immersif.
