Scenography

The challenge of the project is to renew the exhibition while retaining the sense of the journey, most of the rooms in their current configuration, some of the existing display cases, and to create two new spaces. The aim is to offer a permanent exhibition that represents the richness of the collections, covering the 12th to 21st centuries and including works from Asia other than China. The mediation has been redesigned to be more suitable for young audiences, and the security of the current display cases remains a priority. The new chronological journey highlights cultural exchanges through themed display cases. The spaces in the new tour are designed to display a variety of objects while maintaining the flow of the current tour. The chronological sequences have been redesigned to include objects from recent periods and to highlight Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese objects. Two new spaces frame this tour: the first, dedicated to Henri Cernuschi, recreates the fundamental contribution of this pioneer of Japonism. The end of the tour, dedicated to paintings mounted on scrolls, screens, prints, and other works created on fragile media, features a rotating exhibition of works by 20th-century masters. At the center of the tour, the space at the foot of the Buddha is now an open space, hosting exceptional presentations, contemporary installations, events, performances, and evenings organized as part of the museum’s sponsorship program. In addition, new display cases and new graphic mediation devices have been installed.
