The Balèn project is a scientific and recreational exploration center dedicated to cetaceans, developed by Globice to combine science, mediation, and promotion of natural heritage, while responding to local challenges of protection and tourism strategy. Located on the Grands Bois site, it aspires to become a dynamic “whale hub” thanks to its third-place design. Upon arrival, visitors discover a welcoming, hybrid, event-driven space that includes playgrounds, gardens, dining areas, and exhibition spaces. The tour begins with an informative welcome area, followed by a dreamlike immersion into the habitat of cetaceans, with a 180° projection and magical interactions with whales. The scientific exploration and discovery area showcases the work of Globice researchers through various interactive and educational installations. The three thematic sections—cetacean characteristics, behaviors and lifestyles, and contemporary issues—are organized into fluid islands, evoking a marine landscape. The display of skeletons and artifacts provides an in-depth understanding of cetaceans, while interactive and audiovisual modules stimulate curiosity and learning. Finally, the public discussion area, set up as a forum, invites visitors to reflect and debate on the relationship between humans and cetaceans, promoting dialogue on the preservation of these marine giants.
