Scenography

The Palais des Papes, one of the most visited monuments in France (over 750,000 visitors/year), now deserves a visitor experience that matches its exceptional character. Far more than just a large Gothic building, it is the materialization of an ambitious political and cultural program conceived in times of crisis—a manifesto of a “new Rome” and a prototype of a theocratic and absolutist power in full transformation.
The new tour aims to align space and narrative, so that the Palace “speaks for itself.” By revealing the functional logic and the hierarchy of the site (private spaces, public spaces), it provides visitors with a clear mental map and a global reading of this “machine for impressing” designed by the popes. This intellectual comfort becomes the primary guarantor of physical comfort: understanding alleviates fatigue, gives meaning to the effort, and improves the quality of the visit for everyone.
The scenographic approach embraces a dialogue with the scale of the building through three complementary registers and three scales: reconstructing at the architectural scale (Histopad and decors), evoking presences at the human scale (animated portraits, voices, atmospheres), and showcasing contemporary stagings at the scale of the object. The experience is paced by a clear alternation: keys to understanding, contemplation, rest, and in-depth study, moving away from monotony to integrate the garden and create an accessible, lively, and memorable tour.
