Scenography
«Theater has a very long tradition. We have seen contemporary performance venues become increasingly standardised, with conservative principles of internal operation,’ says Rem Koolhaas, founding partner of OMA. ’We want to contribute to the history of theatre. Here in Taipei, we have been able to combine three theatres in a special way.»The building consists of a Globe Playhouse, an 800-seat spherical theatre, a Grand Theatre with 1,500 seats and an 800-seat Blue Box. The three auditoriums are connected to a central cube. The cube houses the stages, backstage areas and auxiliary spaces for the three theatres. The Grand Theatre and the Blue Box can then be combined to form a single Super Theatre, for performances that defy imagination. The Globe Playhouse, with its unique proscenium, allows for experimentation with various forms of stage framing. The protruding theatres of the Taipei Performing Arts Centre give the building multiple faces and set it apart from other typical theatres, which have a public front façade and a rear façade that is often highly technical. The Grand Theatre can host operas, concerts, contemporary Chinese operas, ballet and dance, as well as other events.
