As part of an “Artistic Campus” project, the University and Conservatory (CNSMD) of Lyon requested our assistance in
designing a black box theater as part of a comprehensive renovation and energy efficiency improvement project. In the former “Isère building,” constructed in 1847 for the Lyon veterinary school, we developed a concept for a room adapted to the Conservatory’s new needs for dance and music practice. Building on the heritage value of the building and its volumetric capabilities, the new Black Box offers a particularly flexible space for creation and rehearsal. In a new envelope, equipped with variable acoustic panels, this room benefits from glass openings that can be covered. Musicians and dancers can enjoy natural light or complete darkness, depending on the staging. The shock-absorbing dance floor covers the entire room, providing comfort, bounce, and durability for users. The entire BlackBox stage is covered by a tubular grid and motorized, pre-wired supports, forming a hyper-functional mesh. An upper mezzanine facilitates the installation of control consoles and offers an elevated viewpoint for choreographers and teachers during rehearsals.
