Scenography
“Theater has a very long tradition. We have seen contemporary performance venues become increasingly standardized, with conservative internal operating principles,” says Rem Koolhaas, founding partner of OMA. «We want to contribute to the history of theater. Here in Taipei, we have been able to combine three theaters in a unique way. «The building consists of a Globe Playhouse, an 800-seat spherical theater, a Grand Theater with 1,500 seats, and a Blue Box with 800 seats. The three theaters are connected to a central cube. The cube houses the stages, backstage areas, and ancillary spaces for the three theaters. The Grand Theater and the Blue Box can then form a single Super Theater, for performances beyond imagination. The Globe Playhouse, with its unique proscenium, allows for experimentation with various forms of stage framing. The protruding theaters of the Taipei Performing Arts Center give the building multiple faces and differ from other typical theaters, which often have a public front facade and a highly technical rear facade. The Grand Theater can host operas, concerts, contemporary Chinese operas, ballet and dance, as well as events.
